시대가 당신을 가만히 내버려두지 않을 때,
무서운 것도 아름다운 것도 우리의 상상을 넘어서지.
짐승들은 당신의 소비를 위해 복제되고,
컴퓨터는 당신의 양말들을 누비고 있어.
그것들은 새로운 꽃을 만들어내고,
삶과 죽음의 새로운 길을 열어내고 있지.
(지금, 내 말 듣고 있는거지?)
증오는 모든 곳으로 슬금슬금 기어들어가고,
모든 경계는 희미해지며,
전쟁은 하나의 사건에 불과할 때,
또 다른 학살이 이어질꺼야.
(이런 것, TV로 중계해도 당신은 시시해서 보지도 않을꺼야.)
영리한 병균은 치료법을 비웃고,
새로운 미생물은 창조되며,
예전의 미생물은 새로운 속임수를 배우겠지.
(근데, 당신은 뭘 배운거야?)
돼지는 우리를 위해 새로운 심장을 키우고,
우리의 늙은 심장은 여러 얼굴을 좋아하겠지.
그 심장은 가상세계에 두고온 애인 때문에 잠을 못 이루고 말이야.
(당신! 심장이 있기나 한거야?)
조만간 수소차를 타고 이리저리 미끄러지듯 질주하며,
멋진 스쿠터와 자기부상 열차도 타겠지.
상상초월의 초전도체는 우리를 얼마나 빨리 모셔다 줄까?

숱한 정보는 홍수처럼 몰려오고,
그 정보들은 우리에게 희망을 가지라고 부채질해대지.
그러나 지혜가 상품이 될 때,
지식은 괴상해질 거야.
(그때는 누굴 신뢰할 수 있을까?)
수십억명의 사람들은 서로에게 기대며,
지혜로운 노인을 찾으려 하고, 선출된 관리들을 믿겠지.
수십억명은 아직도 컴퓨터조차 쓰지 않는다구.
이들은 아직 뭐가 특별한 지도 몰라!
(이들이 불쌍한 거야, 우리가 불쌍한거야?)
그러나 조심하라구. 시간은 점점 빨리 달릴 것이고,
그 속도를 가늠할 수도 없고, 어디서 느려질지 빨라질지도 몰라.
당신이 꼭 잡고 있는 게, 당신을 살려줄까?
아니면, 그것이 당신을 배신할까?
(거듭 말하지만 주위를 주의깊게 보라구.)
파도타는 법을 배우지 않으면, 이 세계에선 죽을지 몰라.
시대의 조류가 어떻게 흘러가는지 눈여겨 보라구.
그리곤... 죽기살기로 노를 젓듯 손을 바닷물 속에 넣어 놀리라고.
아뭏든 친구, 꼭 살아 있어야 하네.
그래야 또 만나지.
This is not a time to be nonchalant about your lives!
Things are happening that are both horrible
and wonderful beyond our imagining.
Animals are being cloned for your consumption.
Computers are being woven into your socks.
They're inventing new flowers.
And new ways to live and die.
(Are you paying attention?)
Hate is spanning continents.
Borders are dissolving.
War is a media event —
The next genocide will be televised.
(Will you be watching?)
Clever diseases are adapting
to sidestep new cures.
New microbes are being patented;
Old ones are learning new tricks.
(What are you learning?)
Pigs will grow new hearts for us
While our old hearts will grow fond of
faces over wireless rivers of bandwidth;
Hearts to be broken by virtual lovers.
(Where is your heart?)
Soon we'll glide on hydrogen chariots
and Stirling scooters and maglev trains
Superconductors will take the reins
And move us faster, ever faster.
(But, do you know where you're going?)
Turbulent data is flooding the culture.
Information is boiling, steaming our vision
While wisdom becomes a commercial commodity
And knowledge is power and power is an oddity
To most of us regular folks.
(Do you know who you can trust?)
Yet billions of people rely on each other.
They trust their elders, their elected offcials.
Billions of people do not use computers;
they do not see them as anything special.
(Do we pity Them? Or do they pity Us?)
You must be alert because time is accelerating
At different speeds in different places.
Is what you hold onto moving you forward?
Or holding you back while "progress" erases
Your every anchor, your every point of reference.
(You must pay attention now. To everything. All the time.)
You will learn to surf or you will drown.
So watch for clues that swirl around
In the currents of our times.
And paddle like hell
when you feel the swell.
