From now, Shindonga is going to introduce a story of a scientist who 'madly' wrote out ten thousand pages of numerical formulae. And when he gets appraised by the great scholars of the world as the man who rewrote the history of science, it would certainly be something for us to brag on about, as well as being great news for Korea. We certainly do hope that his dream does come true.
“Principal Dong-bong Yang turns those complex numerical formulae in Physics into numerical values. Through this anyone can verify the authenticity of equations quickly and easily. This is the dream equation started off by great mathematicians Leibniz, Godel, and a Nobel Physics Prize winner Feynman.”
This is what Professor Myonghwan Oh of Electro-technology and Vice Chancellor of Dankook University had to say about the theory discovered and produced by Mr. Dong-bong Yang, the head of Standard Physics. Professor Oh was a Vice President of KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology) and was also a founding committee member of Samsung's Future Technology Committee. To add further, he was awarded with Fellow award at SID(Society for Information Display) in June this year.
So, what is it that Yang found that Professor Oh is showering him with high praises? First, we need to know the true meanings of “...turns those complex numerical formulae in Physics into numerical values, and with it, anybody can verify the authenticity of equations quickly and easily”. It means that once the left and right sides of an equation are converted into numerical values, the truth of the equation is easily clarified.
For example, let’s solve this problem together. What will be the gravitation (N) on a 200 kg (m2) spaceship while it’s orbiting twice the distance of earth's radius away from the center of earth? Here, earth’s mass (m1) is approximately 5.98*10^24 kg.
But for instance, let’s say some physicist had solved this very complicated problem with an answer F=G (m1*m2/r^2). I'm sure there would be many ways to verify the right or wrong of this answer but the point is that we have to be satisfied with the equal sign(=).
Then what about this? What if we convert the force(N), mass(kg), or length(m) in the equation into numerical values? Then whatever the outcome, the left and right sides of the equation would be left with numerical values and we only need to check if those two numbers are the same. For example, is the LHS shows a numerical value 7.2349687… *10^41 , we only need to check if the RHD shows the same value.
Therefore, if we can show any value of units in terms of numerical values, any old equation can easily be verified. This is the “Dream Equation” Professor Oh is referring to. This also refers to “What physicists ultimately want to achieve is assigning a numerical value to the units and finding out the interrelationship between those numbers...” stated by a theoretical physicist David Lindley.
Then, how do we describe a “Unit” as a number? That is, a meter is a meter. How do we convert this?
In science, we currently use 7 International Units(IU), namely mass(kg), length(m), time(s), brightness(cd), quantity of molecule(mol), current(A) and temperature(K). Using these basic units, Scientists explain the world we live in.
However, not too many are aware that these quantities in physics which we naturally accept were found through detailed experiment and these values constantly change. For example, standard 1 meter is referred to the Primary Standard 1 meter made out of iridium and white gold alloy, kept in Paris, France. But with further advanced science, 1 meter now is defined to a distance light has traveled in vacuum, for one three hundred millionth of a second.
What we can find out from this is that while units explain natural phenomena, they are artificially created by scientists. For this reason, the concept and standard of units can change depending on the time of era. Professor Gun-woong Pang of KRISS (Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science) informed us that in the general meeting of APMP(Asia-Pacific Metrology Program) held in India last year, an argument was produced to re-define units used in physics with a natural invariable and that they are actually planning to redefine the value of mass in year 2011.
For example, if they do define the value of mass (kg) with an Avogadro's number, a natural invariable number, the ‘kg’ will disappear, leaving only a number. In other words, the world of Science is now stepping towards defining UNITS to better explain the nature, than thinking it as something fixed.
Why Yang’s discovery was more meaningful was that he was successful in converting all 7 units into numbers. For example, he turned 1 m into 3.3356409519815204957557671447492 *10^-9 , and 1kg into 1.3563926662445108982958760329564 *10^50 . They remind you of the endless marching of numbers in the movie “Matrix”, do they not? Then how did he discover these numbers and what will they lead us to, and how are they going to change the current physics world?
In order to unify the metric system (7 International Units), Yang came up with a postulate c(Speed of light)=h(Planck's constant)=s(time)=1. (--Although it is impossible to prove true, it is acknowledged true in theoretical and practical terms--) Yang had named this ‘Zero Zone’.
Here, the number 1 stands for one photon, a grain of light. Therefore, in Yang's claim, one photon, the speed of light, Planck's constant - universe's lowest unit in energy as we know, and one second are considered the same. That means one photon is equivalent to mass, speed, time and length(wavelength) and they all equal to '1'. Next is Yang's further explanation.
“The numbers of photons make up a number and it becomes an unique oscillation frequency in each phenomenon. This oscillation frequency is the continuance from number '1' and it becomes quantification of nature. And when quantification of nature groups up in a certain way, it becomes discontinuance and becomes quantization of nature”.
I'm sure this assumption and explanation may get you more confused, so let's just accept it for time being. What we need to pay closer attention on is how this assumption can lead to turning metric system into numbers and need to verify how those numbers are related to values resulted from modern study of physics. It's like saying although we do not understand how Einstein's E=mc works, it does get used a lot in variety of ways. Let's just say that number '1' suggested by Yang is something 'that does not change regardless of time' or a something 'the smallest in the world'.
Using 'Zero Zone' theory, Yang had successfully converted 7 International Units into a number of grains of light. For example, length (m)= ac^2 , mass kg= bc^2 , and temperature (K)= cc^2 (Table is shown in this site: http://blog.naver.com/chosy011.do?Redirect=Log&logNo=150021166666). Let's take another look at previously mentioned 1m=3.3356409519815204957557671447492 *10^-9 . The number listed here is a value of , and it means that there are this many number of light grains in 1 meter. Yang is assuming that nature (or universe) is made up of grains of light and he'd named or 'Zero-level Constants'.
We don't really need to understand how length and mass can be described as an equation but for more enthusiastic readers of physics studies, Professor Oh adds further. Ordinary readers can do without this part of explanation.
“Through intuition and analyzing experiment data, Yang had discovered a very concise postulate. He had analyzed the current metric system in combination of 3, namely C(electric charge), V(electric potential), and m(length). With this, I believe he's going to cause a great impact in the world of physics, right through micro and macro world. Another thing is that he actually had set '1' as the standard to be compared to, defining it to be the Original Material for both explanation and calculation. The calculated value can be explained in terms of unique oscillation of frequency(Hz). This goes to say that everything in the universe is the same, only different in oscillation of frequency”.
This time, let's take a look at the meaning of Yang's 'Zero-level Constant'. In our language, when things are on different levels, they are usually not compatible with different terminology or it is impossible to describe something in different language.
For example, mom, dad, uncle and aunt are on the same level and their relationship can be easily explained since they are all linked to dad. It is, however, impossible to explain the relationship between dad and happiness, surprise, blue since they are on different levels.
'Zero-level Constant' is a number without a level. Applying this number, it is now possible for us to add or to subtract between units we thought were on different levels. We can add 1kg to 1m, or 1 second can be subtracted from 1 degree Celsius since everything can be described in terms of number of light grains. To describe to an extreme, equations like ‘10kg-80m=0’ or ‘10kg=80m’ can exist and perhaps we can most likely be able to give a coarse explanation on what they all mean.
Up until now, natural scientists had believed it was impossible to perform addition or subtraction with values of physics. Have you ever questioned yourself why it was impossible to add or subtract while multiplication and division were possible? Perhaps we did not continue with our questions long enough. Yang explains that although we need the units, we need to set ourselves free from the shackles of levels.
I suspect such a theory as this would bring a revolutionary change to our understanding. This is because the natural phenomenon we believed was fully separate from one another now comes in one clear view. I believe being able to describe 7 different units as numbers showing different number of light grains would bring a massive shock to this society. Here is what Professor Heon-ju Lee, doctor in Nucleonic, of Jeju University had to say.
“Einstein's E=mc , which states Mass and Energy are of same value, is very famous. This equation says that there exists a ratio value c between Energy and Mass, and that it set up a brand new paradigm in physics. But now, Yang's 'Zero Zone' theory had discovered such ratio relationship exists between all units we use in physics, namely length, time, temperature, current and pressure and he was successful in coming up with a numerical value. This was very original and revolutionary, enough to cause a massive change in modern paradigm”.
Perhaps it is now time to verify Yang's theory. I know some may ask how Shindonga could verify something like this when it is difficult enough to even understand it, but there is a way. We can compare the basic value CODATA(Committee on Data for Science and Technology) - located in Paris, France, announces on invariable number in physics to that of Yang came up with, using his 'Zero Zone' theory. 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics winner Steven Weinberg once said, to verify the correctness of a theory, one should only need to check if it equals the invariable number already measured.
CODATA was established by the committee members of ICSU(International Council for Science) in 1966. They are responsible for collection, administration and process of data which are considered important in the world of science. The committee cyclically provides with internationally acknowledged basic invariable number in physics, and changes in other variable numbers.
For example, the invariable number in physics like Energy(J), Length(m), Frequency(Hz), Temperature(K), electronic Voltage(eV), Atomic Mass Unit(u), Hartley Energy(Eh), and more are already discovered (1kg=8.987551787… *10^16 J, 1J=6.24150947(53) *10^18 eV, 1eV=3.67493245(31) 10^-2 Eh…). All these values mentioned are produced from experiments and they are all officially approved internationally and every natural science and technical theory are started off with this data as basic value. That is to say the 'standard for standards' is data actually provided by this committee.
Finally, let's compare the value CODATA has put out against the value from Yang's theory. The data to be compared are recommended by the committee and were verified by Dr. Peter J. Mohr of NIST, USA. This test results were published in a specialized scientific journal managed by US institute of physics (Reviews of Modern Physics, Volume 77, and January 2005).
In the result, surprisingly, 60 out of 64 conformed and the remaining 4 did not (refer to the same internet site above). This conformation suggests that Yang's theory does fall in the range of accidental error for CODATA's value. For example, CODATA's value 1kg=8.987551787… *10^16 J was same as the value from Yang's theory.
On the other hand, the ones which did not conform were actually off the accidental error range from the value given by CODATA. The four not conformed were the values gained from when 1Eh was converted into length(m ) and Frequency(Hz) and vice versa, when 1m and 1Hz were converted into Eh (Refer to attachment).
But arguing over 4 values which did not conform is like saying result gained from tens of millions of dollar equipment is incorrect. The institution was utterly lost for words. They have every reason to be stunned, because it's like saying a value figured out using pen and paper is more accurate than a value gained from a highly equipped lab.
But what's more stunning is that they are claiming that the numbers from theory are more accurate even though both parties had conformed. The experiment result only listed values with 7 or 8 decimal places but the theory values usually give you numbers with over 30 decimal places.
Some may argue this would not prove much difference but there is a huge difference. For those who actually use the result, difference in number of decimal places would prove a great difference. If a nation's satellite with higher accuracy can pinpoint a target it desires with better accuracy, it could mean the difference of winning or losing a war.
For those who wonder how he came up with these values, Yang explains further.
“In whole, I just came to understand the concepts of many, like Frege's arithmetic-the founder of computer languages, Phenomenology of Edmund Husserl - who had stronger emphasis on intuition, words of Wittgentein - which was the study of words, and ideas of Godel who take over Leibniz's dreams. Also, in order to overcome the problems of Thomas Kuhn's 'Incommensurability', I took countermeasures for symbols with numbers. This comes from a idea where any two natural invariables are blueprints for nature. Through numbers, I discovered the cobweb like relationship in some 20 invariables. Through this, I gained the accuracy within the standard deviation of experiments”.
The changes expected to be made, due to the reason that units used in physics can be converted into numbers, is simply unimaginable. Such fact where units can be converted into numbers only means that numbers can be converted into equations. That means from now on, science will no longer look for an equation following an experiment.
Using this method, Yang was able to calculate the mass of neutrino, which is considered one of the most difficult problems of time. He'd had came up with an equation which shows the value of neutrino's mass after combining the mass of elementary particle and natural invariable. He had presented this result in European Physical Journal C, as a thesis, in 2006 (For significance of this publication, refer to article on Special Edition 2)
To sum up, it is like finding an equation which can properly explain the answer (number) we already knew. Inside Yang's computer system, there are over 900 million numbers along with some equations which satisfies those numbers. To explain this method, here is what Professor Byong-ro Moon, of Computer Technology Department at Seoul University had to say;
“I had an opportunity to take a look at the unique equation Yang discovered, and it was something very difficult to deduce, even for optimization majored professionals using computers. I don't believe it would have been possible if it wasn't for database Yang had created, along with his intuition on invariables on physics”.
He further adds, “I can confidently make deductions on some incorrect data in the cross table worked out by US Physics Society, with data coming from CODATA”. And says “What Yang had discovered is very amazing and marvelous”.
With Professor Moon's explanations, it's possible for us to understand that the number Yang had discovered suggests the relationship on what the universe is made up of. A number which can explain the unchangeable being. If he does find out the equation which satisfies this, perhaps it may be able to explain the theory behind what the universe is made up of. It gives me quite a shiver to think that we may already have the answer to secrets to formation of universe.
Then, what would actually happen if Yang's theory does get accepted in the academic world and it gets used in related industries? Dr. Sang-mok Lee of Korea Institute of Industrial Technology had this to say;
“If he goes beyond the understanding the origin of physics' invariables, and finds out the relationship among those numbers, it would be worth more than anyone can ever imagine. Because you can analogize a result without an experiment, 90% of experimental activities would vanish and they can concentrate on the experiments that are genuinely needed. This alone gives us an infinite economic advantage. Also, the effects it would have on information, computers, materials, elementary particles, and bio-engineering would be humongous. It would be way beyond humongous”.
If those separated natural phenomena could be united as one system, the first expected would be revolution on computer algorithm. If all those complex algorithms are simplified, computer's memory capacity will be greatly improved. Also, if more accurate data can be provided rather than a value gained from an experiment, it would lead to a huge effect on materials industry.
Every illness can be converted into numbers and their symptoms can also be converted and stored as numbers. This would lead to improvements on medical industry. Then there would be revolutionary change taking place in agricultural products if information on DNA on products and place of origin are grasped. Once these complicated equations of physics are put in simple terms, even elementary school child would understand the language of physicists. It would be true democratization of science.
It would certainly have effect on national defense industry where high precision is vital. The idea of everything in the universe are the same, except for different oscillation frequency, it'd start a fresh breeze of change in the areas of philosophy and religion. Of course, hard to learn, complicated notations will inevitably be degraded.
After having his theory and the basis of it introduced in the August issue of Shindonga for the first time, Yang plans to work out old homework on science. He will also have his discoveries announced, namely all elementary particles, superconductor, mass of universe, the radius and age of universe, background radiation on universe, and density of universe.
Listening to Yang's claim that the age of electron is older than the age of universe, you can almost feel that you can 'feel' the 'universe inside a single mustard seed'. I'm sure when his theory does get proven true; the whole world will have changed, into something we can ever imagine now.
